Heavy industry

Heavy industries include mining and metal processing. Luminaires for these applications require high ingress protection ratings and explosion-proof design for some areas.

Uniformity may be a challenge for heavy industry lighting installations due to large equipment that may block the light. Unwanted shadows from machines should be taken into consideration when planning the light. Good vertical illumination makes instruments easy to read and additionally aids navigation and movement on stairways and in tall rooms.

Corrosion-resistant luminaires with proper ingress protection need to be used for areas at risk of condensation. Vision may be impaired by dust, smoke or vapours, so higher light levels are needed in heavy manufacturing areas with occasional or continuous manual operation. This can be achieved in a cost-effective way by using energy-efficient LED luminaires, which also offer better colour rendering and often work well even in operating temperatures of as much as 60°C.

The work in heavy manufacturing plants can get very specific on constantly manned workplaces such as control rooms or operating rooms. This requires proper task area lighting – either with the use of arm-based task lights or linear lights above the workstations.
