The Shakespeare Theatre was established in the 17th-century building of the Fencing School. Its structure is inspired by the Fortune Theatre in London. It was the first public theatre in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Main Hall of the theatre is a reconstruction of the former Gdańsk Elizabethan theatre. The design aimed for exceptional spatial flexibility. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible to create various types of stages: classical Italian, Elizabethan, arena stage, and others. For this reason, the lighting throughout the space had to be exceptionally uniform.
