The multi-purpose SKS Arena in the town of Fauske, located above the Arctic Circle in Norway, has received a major retrofit with a smart LED lighting system from Glamox. The indoor arena, with its high-quality artificial turf pitch, is also the home ground of FK Fauske/Sprint, which next season will compete in the Third Division, or fourth tier, of Norwegian football.
The stadium lighting is proving popular with players, fans, and other users of the sports arena. The old metal halide lamps caused uneven lighting, leaving dark spots where players could hide. The old lighting was replaced with 90 Glamox i65 LED luminaires, which provide consistent illumination for players and fans alike and meet the quality standards required for TV broadcasts.
The energy-efficient luminaires are connected to a Glamox Ethernet2DALI lighting management system. This allows stadium management to precisely control the lights. For example, they can switch on only one section of the pitch during training or activate just the perimeter lighting for runners doing laps. Additionally, the lights can be monitored and managed from any location with a secure internet connection.
“With the new lights, we expect a reduction in energy consumption of at least 25 percent,” says Tom Erik Lund, Managing Director of the SKS Arena. “If we suddenly see that the light is on when it doesn’t need to be on, someone can log in and control it from home.”
It is important that the lights withstand direct impacts from footballs, and the i65 luminaire is compliant with the latest sports lighting impact testing.
“The lights can withstand being hit by a ball. That can happen in a hall where the ceiling height ranges from 10 to 23 metres,” explains Lund. “Every year we had to rent a lift; there were costs related to changing bulbs, costs to hire someone to do the job.”
“We effectively turned a hall above the Arctic Circle into an artificial sun-filled arena that has become an asset for the local community,” said Toril Bache Jenssen, Director of Sales for Glamox in Norway.
“We supplied powerful lighting fixtures with quality LEDs that last longer than 100,000 hours with outputs ranging up to 70,000 lumens,” added Bache Jenssen.

Haneseth in Fauske is Glamox’s customer and installed the lighting.
