Historic building meets modern lighting at Tollboden, Trondheim

When the iconic Tollboden at Brattørkaia in Trondheim was refurbished, lighting played a key role in preserving the building’s historic character – while also delivering energy-efficient and modern solutions.

Glamox supplies lighting products that combine functionality, aesthetics, and customisation possibilities. The delivery included models such as C80-S, C80-W, FX35-P, FX45-P (both suspended and surface-mounted), as well as A25-S, i40, i60, C70-S575, and O86. For the client, it was crucial to use luminaires of high quality and energy efficiency, as well as appealing aesthetics in this historic building – as in addition to a punctual delivery of accurate orders.

Close collaboration in demanding conditions

The project set high standards for both technical and aesthetic adaptation. Tollboden is a listed building with protected architecture, requiring special consideration for its historical character and existing architectural expression. This was achieved through close dialogue between the client, interior architects, and consulting engineers at Norconsult, as well as the installer, Argon, and our project team at Glamox.

To meet the project’s needs, customised products were delivered – including FX45 and C80 in specially configured lengths, tailored to the building’s various spaces. Many adjustments had to be made along the way, but through strong collaboration and thorough planning, the result was a modern lighting installation that both preserves and enhances the building’s original character.
