Emergency and rescue area lighting

Rescue areas and meeting points are provided on Naval or Marine vessels in case of emergency situations such as a fire or if the ship is in danger of sinking. As with all areas, rescue points have particular demands on installed lighting.

The required lighting solution must work in all weather conditions and will also provide a safe working environment.

Special demands for rescue areas

It is important to install spot lights and floodlights to illuminate the surface of the sea in order to identify rescue boats and life rafts to enable people to disembark the vessel safely. This lighting must provide instantaneous light output from the moment it is switched on. Emergency (battery or UPS powered) back up lighting must also be installed in case of power failure/black-out situations.

Important factors when choosing lighting solutions for rescue areas:

  • Meeting points (in case of fire or ship sinking).
  • Spot lights to illuminate the surface of the sea.
  • Instant light output from start up.
  • Emergency systems in case of black-outs.
  • Ingress Protection (IP) rating.

Instantaneous light

In case of danger or an emergency, time is a critical factor. It is therefore impossible to wait for discharge lamps to warm up. Lighting such as spot lights and emergency exit signs must be available instantly to reduce the risk of injuries. The lighting illumination should have an average level of at least 50 lux.

Emergency backup lighting systems

In case of a blackout, lights must have a backup power system, either via a centralised UPS or decentralised with integrated battery backup.
