University of Nottingham GlaxoSmithKline

Education

Nottingham

University of Nottingham’s GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Carbon Neutral Laboratory is a highly sustainable development, constructed entirely from natural materials. The landmark laboratory houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and a communal winter garden.

Brief

The university required an innovative lighting and control solution to supplement the Carbon Neutral project’s sustainability. Energy efficiency was of course very important, and a variety of luminaires would be required to meet the demands of the different areas.

Solution

With energy efficiency the main priority, we recommended the use of SKYLUX® UD, SLIMLUX® 610, and Hi-Mount ranges for the University’s almost wholly wooden development. Ideal for communal areas, Hi-Mount pendant luminaires were installed within the winter garden and circulation spaces, recessed SLIMLUX® luminaires were incorporated into the laboratory’s integrated service rafts and office spaces, along with SKYLUX® UD in circulation spaces and teaching areas. Each luminaire was linked to an Ethernet2DALI control system, with intelligent technology bolstering GSK’s overall energy savings.

Result

The University of Nottingham’s Carbon Neutral Laboratory conducts ground-breaking chemical research in facilities lit by incredibly energy efficient luminaires.  It is one of the first buildings in the world to receive the highest certifications under both the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating systems for green buildings. We are proud to have supplied luminaires and lighting controls to help the university realize these outstanding achievements.
