Smart lighting solution reduces energy consumption in the parking facility by up to 92%

The Finalebanen parking facility in Trondheim is a great example of how a lighting control system can provide both safe navigation and a significant reduction in energy consumption.

Trondheim Parkering, the public parking company in Trondheim, recently upgraded two of its facilities with new i40 LED luminaires and a wireless lighting control system from Glamox. At Finalebanen, the largest of the parking facilities, energy consumption has been reduced by up to 92%. At the same time, the new solution ensures safe passage for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Safe navigation
Glen Møller, Key Account Manager at Glamox, explains:
“The wireless Glamox system uses a 'follow-me function', meaning that when a sensor in one luminaire detects a moving car or pedestrian, it transmits the signal to the next luminaire in the network. Each luminaire that receives the signal then communicates with the surrounding luminaires, telling them to increase the light from 10% to 90%. This ensures that the car or person always has an illuminated path ahead while moving through the parking facility. A base lighting level of 10% is maintained at all times to provide depth perception and a sense of safety.”

Cloud-based monitoring
Furthermore, Glamox Wireless allows Trondheim Parkering to have full control of the lighting installation from their central office via Glamox’s cloud-based solution. The system includes energy consumption reports and maintenance status updates, letting the parking operator know if a luminaire or driver has failed. It can also provide visual heat mapping of usage within the parking facility.
